From September 2024, the Basic Life Support demonstration will revert to how it was assessed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Candidates should follow current guidelines – The Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) 2021 Resuscitation Guidelines and the RCUK Quality Standards for CPR.
Candidates will be expected to:
– Assess and manage the airway and assess breathing as per current guidelines.
– Ventilate the mannequin by providing rescue breaths using the pocket mask provided.
The pocket mask will have a one-way valve and filter in place, and these MUST remain in place for the whole of the BLS assessment. The filter and one-way valve are in place to protect candidates and staff, and do not affect the ability to ventilate the manikin.
Removal of the filter, the one-way valve, or not using the pocket mask will represent unsafe practice, and the marks given for BLS will reflect this.
